We Want You!
|
|
Do you have
an interest in Civil War history? Have you read the books, seen the
movies, and wondered what it was really like? The 2nd Colorado Cavalry
invites you to attend one of our events, talk to us about what it is we
do, and perhaps join our ranks as a trooper, either mounted or
dismounted. Depending on your size, we might even be able to suit you up and equip you so you can try it out.

| Men
|
We are a mainstream unit which means we are more accepting about the quality of uniform and equipment yo u might already have. While we strive for excellence and require all modern effects to be
hidden away from public view, we don't require that you purchase expensive, "museum quality" uniforms or gear.
Be aware that cheap, imported uniforms and gear rarely survive the
rigors of a full season. That beautiful Federal blue jacket with the
canary yellow trim may seem like a bargain until it fades to a purple
with beige trim or shrinks two sizes when it gets wet. Cheap wool
uniforms are also considerably hotter to wear. Consider buying used or
we can direct you to a number of mid priced, quality "sutlers" when you
are ready to purchase your own. Stay away from brass framed pistols as
those were only issued by the Confederacy, and don't buy cheap imported
sabers as they are dangerous. Since this was a younger man's war,
consider "Just For Men" to conceal graying hair. Cigars or pipes should
replace cigarettes when smoking in public.

Women
Women may join us in period attire as nurses, laundresses, visitors or camp followers. They may also portray a uniformed
soldier providing they can pass as a man at a distance of ten feet or
less. This is known as the 10 foot rule.
Many
women did follow their husbands to war and some actually served,
disguised as men or teen-aged boys. A few even wore false mustaches and
beards. Some were captured and sent to prison as POWs and some died in
battle. If their true gender was ever discovered, they were sent home.
If you can pass as a man at 10 feet away, then you can join in the
battles in uniform. Not adequately disguising your gender destroys the
illusion for both the spectators and your fellow reenactors. If women
get startled when you enter the Ladies Room, then you know you achieved
the desired result.

| Pets |
With
few exceptions, pets are not allowed. Animal behavior is unpredictable
when confronted with horses, running men, and the smoke and noise from
cannon and gun fire.

| We are a family friendly unit, and encourage you to bring yours, in period attire of course. |
| 16 is the
minimum age to participate
in battle. 12 is the minimum age to take the field as a musician, flag
bearer, message runner or artillery powder monkey. For safety, younger
children must be attended and stay in camp or watch the battles from
the sidelines.
